1. Make a packing list

If there’s one thing every anxious traveller needs, it’s a packing list. Before packing for your trip, research the weather and climate of the places you’re going to. Choose your clothes according to functionality and versatility, plus some stylish items for a night out. Jot everything down onto a list, along with any jewellery, electronics or other necessities you’ve packed. You can also use it as a check list to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything when packing up to go home.

2. Leave nothing to the last minute

Make (another) list of all the things you need to do before your trip. Be sure to get all of them done by the night before you leave. When you wake up in the morning, there should be nothing left on your to-do list (other than setting off for your amazing holiday).

3. Keep it together

Passports, medication, credits cards and phones - there are some things on your trip you simply can’t afford to lose. Instead of patting your pockets in a panic every time you need to access them, store them all in a designated spot in your bag – preferably somewhere safe where they won’t fall out.

4. Take photographic evidence

Knowing some useful phrases in the local language, getting a feel for the traditions and customs, and understanding the area can give you a real confidence boost and enhance your travel experience.

7. Don’t overdo it

Travelling is all about adventure and excitement. But it’s important to balance that with a bit of quiet time too. Don’t feel that you have to go on every excursion, see every landmark or take part in every activity. Do the things that interest and excite you, and skip the others – this is your holiday and you can take it as fast or slow as you want to.

8. Treat yourself

Splash out on a spa treatment. Sleep late. Order room service. Go first class. Take this opportunity to do the leisurely and indulgent things that you might not allow yourself in everyday life at home.

9. Exercise

It’s scientifically proven that exercise is one of the best cures for anxiety and depression. All those happy endorphins are a highly effective way to banish the blues and clear your mind. Go for a run, hike or swim. Do some yoga. Find an exercise you enjoy and work off those travel woes.

10. Keep a travel journal

Writing down your thoughts and emotions is a great way to get them out of your system. Once everything is down on paper, it seems a lot more manageable. Journaling is also a wonderful way to write about your experiences and adventures, so you can remember all the great times you had too.
